NebulaSSH vs WinSCP
WinSCP is the file-transfer half of the classic Windows toolkit: a free, capable SFTP and SCP client that most people pair with PuTTY for the terminal. NebulaSSH puts both halves in one browser tab and drops the Windows requirement.
The functional overlap is large. Both let you browse a remote filesystem, drag files across, edit a file in place, and fix permissions. The difference is where they run: WinSCP is a Windows program you install, and NebulaSSH is a web application you sign into.
That matters when the machine is not yours. On a client's laptop, a shared workstation, a Chromebook or a tablet, installing WinSCP is either awkward or impossible. A browser is already there.
It also matters when you need a shell in the middle of a file job. WinSCP has a basic remote command console but is not a terminal emulator, which is why it is normally used next to PuTTY. In NebulaSSH the SFTP panel and a full SSH terminal are the same session, so you can edit a config file and restart the service without switching tools.
Where WinSCP still wins is depth on Windows: a mature scripting interface and .NET assembly, long-standing integration with Windows Explorer, and a completely local, account-free workflow.
Side by side
| Capability | NebulaSSH | WinSCP |
|---|---|---|
| Install required | None — runs in the browser | A Windows executable |
| Platforms | Any modern browser, including ChromeOS and tablets | Windows only |
| Full SSH terminal | Yes, in the same tab as your files | A basic command console; usually paired with PuTTY |
| Drag-and-drop transfers | Yes, including whole folders | Yes |
| Remote file editing | In-browser editing | Built-in editor |
| Machines behind NAT | Connector agent dials out — no port forwarding | Needs a reachable port, a jump host or a VPN |
| Scripting and automation | CLI and API for the fleet | Mature scripting interface and .NET assembly |
| Cost | Free tier, paid plans for teams | Free and open source |
When WinSCP is the better choice
No tool wins everywhere. Stay with WinSCP if any of these describe you:
- You are entirely on Windows and want a free local GUI with no account.
- You automate transfers through the WinSCP scripting interface or .NET assembly.
- You want Windows Explorer integration and local drag-and-drop between folders.
- Files must never pass through a hosted service.
Common questions
Can NebulaSSH replace WinSCP and PuTTY together?
That is the usual reason to switch: the SFTP file manager and a full SSH terminal are the same session, so one browser tab covers what the two Windows tools cover between them.
Does it handle large files?
Yes. Transfers are streamed rather than buffered, and whole folders can be uploaded in one drag.
Can I transfer files to a machine with no public IP?
Yes. Install the connector agent on that machine and it dials out to NebulaSSH, so you can move files to a server behind NAT without forwarding a port.
Does NebulaSSH support SCP as well as SFTP?
File management is built on SFTP, which is what modern OpenSSH servers expect and what WinSCP also defaults to.
Try it on a machine you are sitting at
Open a browser, sign in, add a server. Nothing to install — and nothing left behind if the machine is not yours.
